Body, Mind, & Spirit
Talking things out and changing your perspective on a particular struggle is progress, but it’s not enough. I’ve been on the fence about talk therapy for years. I’ve had a couple of experiences that didn’t have the desired outcome I was seeking, though I know people who have had great success with it. Addressing issues holistically is the key - incorporating therapies for mind, body, and spirit.
Our bodies are imprinted with the wounds and traumas we experience, so somatic work is necessary to release the remnants of it. Through breath work, yoga, and other forms of somatic therapies, we gain body awareness and learn to identify where our emotions are affecting us physically. Here’s a Harvard Health article if you’d like to read more about the mind body connection.
So now let’s talk about the spiritual aspect of our being. For me, the world would seem pretty bleak without my faith in a divine connection, God, the great mystery… whatever you’d like to call it. Having a spiritual anchor gives my life meaning and direction. I didn’t always have this knowing, though. For years I just wandered, lost in the swirling material world that was trying to convince me of its importance with smoke and mirrors. But through prayer, gratitude, and connection to a higher power, I feel more at peace and guided to make the decisions that resonate with my soul. Here’s a Stanford article on the health benefits of belief in a higher power.
